Super Simple

Four steps. A couple of minutes a week.

1. Line with a bag

A 8 gallon compostable bag lines the solids bin. Add a ¾" layer of coco coir or wood chips to the bottom.

2. Go normally

Urine diverts automatically into the sealed bottle. Solids land on the layering material. Retractable cover seals between uses.

3. Add a sprinkle after each use

A small sprinkle of coco coir or wood chips after each use keeps things fresh. The same bag typically lasts a couple of days / 8–12 uses.

4. Tie and bin

When the bag is about ⅔ full, tie it off and bin it. Swap in a fresh bag. That's it.

What to use for layering: Coco coir bricks are the most popular — compact to store, widely available, no prep needed with wood chips. Pine pellets (horse bedding from Tractor Supply) are another favourite. Any carbon-rich organic material works. "Wood chips are easier and less messy since you don't have to rehydrate them first." — Bearfoot Theory

Common Questions

We've heard it all. Here's the honest version.

  • Coco coir is the most popular — compact to store, widely available, and easy to use. Wood chips work well too and don't need rehydrating first. Pine pellets (horse bedding from Tractor Supply) are a popular budget option. Any carbon-rich organic material works fine — Cuddy Lite isn't fussy.

  • Every couple of days for 2 people — roughly 8–12 uses. The retractable cover means the same bag stays fresh between uses. When it's about ⅔ full, tie it off and bin it. Takes under a minute.

  • No external power or venting required — just a standard 9V battery for the LED urine indicator. That's one of its biggest advantages for van builds where you don't want extra wiring or holes in your van.

  • The Cuddy has an agitator and a full composting system — waste breaks down over time, meaning you can go up to 2–3 weeks between empties for 2 people. Cuddy Lite has no agitator — you bag and bin every few days instead. Cuddy Lite is simpler and needs no power. Cuddy is better for full-time living where longer hold capacity matters.
